MEMBERSHIP--MEMBERSHIP--MEMBERSHIP
Is the membership in your pack, troop, team or crew starting to dwindle? Are the Scouts in your unit moving on to the next level of Scouting? Do you need some new Scouts and adult Scouters to reenergize your unit? Fall and spring are the key times to recruit new members into Scouting. Everyone who helps a new Scout join his/her unit earns a free Recruiter patch from Southern Sierra Council. Be sure to collect yours!
Some of the things you can do to help recruit new members are:
Bring a friend to your Scout meeting Distribute information about Scouting at your church, synagogue or temple Talk about how much fun Scouting is with your friends at school Distribute recruitment flyers at your school with the school’s permission Have a recruitment night for new Scouts Invite a friend to a Scouting activity Distribute recruitment flyers in the neighborhood where your Scout unit meets
If you need help with recruitment, please contact your District Executive at 325-9036.
RECHARTER TIME IS HERE!
The charter for your unit lapses at the end of December each year. Now is the time to complete your recharter packet. This process helps you complete membership inventory for your unit and allows Southern Sierra Council to update its records as well. Your recharter packets will let you know if all of the Scouts in your unit are currently registered. If a Scout does not appear on your recharter list, they are probably not registered in your unit. Be sure to complete the necessary applications as soon as possible because only Scouts registered in the appropriate level with Boy Scouts of America can earn rank advancements and awards.
FRIENDS OF SCOUTING STILL NEEDS SOME HELP
Are you or your friends looking for year-end tax deductions? We need your help!
Trailblazer District has almost reached its Friends of Scouting goal of $30,000 for 2008. Please be sure to write “Trailblazer District FOS” on the memo line of the check made payable to “Southern Sierra Council” in support of Boy Scouts of America. These funds help us present terrific programs to thousands of youth throughout our community! If you have not had a Friends of Scouting night in your unit yet, please contact your District Executive to schedule one as soon as possible. To those of you who have already contributed, thanks for your support!
DISTRICT COMMITTEE POSITIONS
The Trailblazer District Nominating Committee is accepting nominations for all committees. These positions include: district chairperson; district commissioner; activities and civic service chairperson; advancement and recognitions chairperson; camp promotions and outdoor chairperson; finance chairperson; marketing chairperson; membership chairperson; program chairperson; and training chairperson. The commissioner’s staff is comprised of volunteer roundtable and unit commissioners. Each chairperson also needs committee volunteers. If you are interested in serving on a district committee, or know someone who might be, please contact the Trailblazer District Executive.
A strong committee helps build a strong district! The Trailblazer District committee meeting is on the third Thursday of the month at 5:30 pm at the Southern Sierra Council office. Everyone is welcome!
UNIT COMMISSIONERS ARE VERY IMPORTANT SCOUTERS!
Trailblazer District has grown to over 100 packs, troops, teams, crews and posts. Sometimes it is a challenge for units to stay on the right path and continue to provide good programs for Scouts. Our volunteer unit commissioners provide a very valuable service—and you may be just the person we are looking for to help.
While working with unit leadership and parents, they offer a friendly ear, the voice of experience and objective guidance, which ultimately helps units thrive. You might be a terrific unit commissioner if you… Have Scouting experience Are a good listener Enjoy problem solving Are a friendly person Believe in the mission of Scouting
What is the time commitment? Unit commissioners attend a one-hour meeting on the first Thursday of the month at the Southern Sierra Council office, as well as visit assigned units one time per month. Do you need to be an expert? No. As with all Scouting, just Do your best!
If your charter organization sponsors a whole family of Scouting (Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturing), this may be an ideal position for you. If not, we will place you with conveniently located units. Our goal is to have one unit commissioner for every three units in our district. Please consider serving as a unit commissioner because you can make a difference!
TRI-DISTRICT ROUNDTABLE
At least one adult leader from every unit should attend the Tri-District Roundtable held on the second Thursday of the month from 6:45 pm-8:30 pm at the Chevron building at 9525 Camino Media in Bakersfield. This is your opportunity to network with other leaders and learn about ways to improve your Scouting program. At Roundtable, leaders can pick up notices from the Trailblazer District mailbox, a terrific source of information regarding district, council, and national programs and events. Roundtable sections include Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturing, Order of the Arrow and Friends of Camp Kern. Believe it or not, Roundtable is actually a lot of fun…and educational, too! P.S. If you miss Roundtable, be sure to drop by the Council Office to pick up your unit’s mail!
TRAINING
Training of youth and adult leaders is an important part of Scouting. Southern Sierra Council provides classes, seminars and training videos to enhance your Scouting experience. In addition, properly trained adult leadership helps provide safer and more interesting Scouting activities for everyone. Be sure to check the council’s training schedule for upcoming classes. Questions or want to help with training? Contact Bill Basham at bbasham@bak.rr.com for more information. |
