James Hanson Shooting Sports Ranges

In 2006, our Camp Kern family lost a dear friend, long time Scoutmaster and mentor to many staff members over his 25+ years in scouting.  Mr. Hanson, took charge of a few boys in East Bakersfield and gave them a strong program with ridged values to hopefully change the course in their lives.

Our Camp Director, Vondre Armour, an Eagle Scout; Eduardo Mancillias, Shooting Sports Director are just two of his scouts that have changed their lives and lived the priciples that Mr. Hanson taught.

Vondre Armour talks about his love for Camp Kern, but James Hanson made sure that his boys attended Camp Kern on purpose, because of what it stands for, what it can give back and its history of helping scouts succeed.

In late July of 2007, with his family present at our camp, we re-dedicated our shooting ranges in his honor.

Mr. Hanson will always live at Camp Kern and he will always watch out for his scouts.

Shooting Sports

Camp Kern Shooting Sports provides an extensive introduction to the safe use of firearms. Scouts will be challenged by our 22 range, shootgun trap/sporting range, archery, NRA programs, Shooting Sports Camp for older Scouts, and field archery.

A.R.M.S. (Archery, Rifle, Muzzle Loading & Shotgun)

Another fun opportunity for scouts is the ARMS program.  Based in the Shooting Sports area, scouts must complete a series of requirements in Archery, Rifle and Shotgun, along with providing 1 hour of volunteering time in helping the shooting staff.   The program is designed for all scouts aged 14 years of age and at a rank of first class or higher.

Each area of this special program is designed to allow the scout to get a feel for the merit badge and also allow him to shoot for points similar to competition.  The requirements for the ARMS program will not be used in conjunction with the merit badges even though many of the requirements are the same.

Requirement pages will be available soon for you to review prior to your visit to Camp.
