During a week at camp, most Scouts will fulfill some of the requirements for the Tenderfoot through First Class ranks by just having fun. The camp staff can assist your Scouts in learning skills that will help them to complete many of the requirements toward First Class rank. There are three staffed program areas in camp that can help your Scouts learn the skills necessary to challenge requirements for Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class ranks.
Please remember that the testing of a Scouts progress toward rank remains the responsibility of your troop’s leadership. The camp staff can encourage new Scouts to focus some of their energy on rank advancement. In order to receive the maximum benefit of the Trail to First Class program in camp, please take the following steps.
1. Complete the "Trail to First Class Tracking Sheet" noting the requirements that each Scout in your troop still needs.
2. Meet with each Scout working toward Tenderfoot, Second, and First Class rank to establish an individual advancement goal that he will achieve during camp.
3. Develop a schedule of instruction for the Scouts in your troop that are working toward Tenderfoot, Second, and First Class rank.
4. Determine the skills that your Troop leadership will instruct and assign instructors. (Troop instructors are welcome to utilize camp equipment in the "Trail to First Class" program area during open program hours)
5. Determine the skills that your troop needs members of the camp staff to instruct in the camp program areas.
6. Determine the skills that you would like the camp staff in the Trail to First Class, Aquatics, and Ecology/Conservation Program Areas to instruct your Scouts. Your Troop Commissioner and the Trail to First Class Director will assist you in scheduling staff during the Sunday Program Planning workshop.
The equipment and facilities of the camp are resources that can be made available to your troop's instructors. Arrangements for these resources can be coordinated through your Troop Commissioner.
